Never, Never, Never, Never, Never, EVER, Give Up

bee for never, never, never, never, never EVER give upI am moved to write this by a writer named Jon Morrow.  He ‘s a good writer.  Very good.

I just got an e-mail from Jon and at the bottom of this post I’m going to give you a link.  Go there right now if you wish.

But this post is about you.

And it’s about me.

This post is about not giving up.

One story of not giving up.

I wanted to be a writer.  I had ideas.  I wanted to write down ideas and have them read.

I had heard about writing as a career.  It was impossible.  Lots of people dreamed about being writers.  They were stupid.  They failed.  They weren’t writers.

Only a few people had the talent to be paid to write.  They were writers.

But I tried writing anyway.  I was prepared to be rejected.  I was rejected.

I didn’t give up.

I kept getting ideas.  I kept writing.

Finally, an article was accepted.  I wrote another article.  It was accepted but I was told by the editor to check first using something called a “query letter.”

I wrote or told my my ideas to editors, and asked if they wanted an article.  Sometimes they did.

It turns out that ideas are in shorter supply than writers.  And the only thing in shorter supply is money to pay writers.

I found out there was barely enough money in writing for a person to live on.

I didn’t give up.

I became a full time freelance writer.  Like I said, there was enough to live on.  I lived by my wits.  I came up with ideas.  I wrote.

And when I told people that I was a writer, do you know what they asked me most often?

“Do they give you the ideas, or do you come up with them?”

Do they give me the ideas?  Oh no, I come up with the ideas.

I come up with the ideas.

I came up with the ideas.

I didn’t give up.

I came up.

I wrote.  And got paid.

I became a professional writer.

I know what you’re thinking,

“So if you’re a writer, why isn’t this Epic Shit?”

That’s not my specialty.  My specialty is not giving up.

Enough about me.

About Jon.  Jon’s recent e-mail to me was special but it wasn’t just to me.  It went to all the people on his subscriber list.

Jon’s e-mail did not offer anything for sale.  It was a sincere a letter of gratitude.  It was the act of a truly grateful person.

Jon has a lot to be grateful for.  He is a writer worth reading.  He has a talent and he has worked very hard to hone his craft. He has a way with words.

Jon didn’t give up.

I said this was about you.  For you, here is The Secret.

The Secret is a simple piece of advice that I give to everyone I care about.  And when I ask them, “What’s the secret?”  they repeat it verbatim.

Here is the secret:

Never, never, never, never, never, EVER give up.

Say it now.  OUT LOUD.

Never, never, never, never, never, EVER give up.

There.  Now you know The Secret.

It’s all you will ever need.

You will want luck, money, love, happiness and a large Swiss wristwatch.

I said “all you will ever need.”

  1. “Never, never, never, never, never, EVER give up.” From Winston Churchill’s speech to the Harrow school students. This is some of the most powerful advice ever given.

You say you don’t write “epic shit” but your writing obviously has the ability “grab” people. This post evoked a very strong emotional response from me. It’s something people can both relate to and be inspired by, That’s a very very powerful combination.

If you ask me that’s pretty freakin epic.

    1. Gee thanks, Micah. Coming from you this means a lot. I’ve been checking out your blog and have found overwhelming evidence of both extreme persistence and a sincere, compelling and quite funny writing style. It’s an honor to have a “real deal” writer comment!

  2. Great post! It’s so true, what you say. It’s all about persistence. The ones who are the most persistence are often rewarded for their efforts. I write because I love it, because I have to get those ideas out. Hopefully at some point, I’ll be rewarded with some modest pay. But in the meantime, I’ll keep writing. Just like you…chugging along.

    1. Jennifer, it means a lot to me that you stopped by and left such a sincere comment. Anyone who would live by their wits and make a living as a writer had better be prepared for little money, less encouragement, and the sweet taste of living life as a writer. Those who dream of being a writer, actor, comedian, painter, sculptor, musician, blogger, and other creative vocations to which many are called and few chosen, face a special kind of hell on their way. When you hear the call and think you have what it takes, never, never, never, never, EVER give up. That is the only real secret of success I know.

    1. Thank you, Nicole. The gift of patient persistence will overcome any obstacle that can be surmounted. And circumvent the rest! I know this from experience. When they tell you “no,” smile, nod, thank them for their time, and start planning your return visit or a visit to their competitor. Failure is an exciting message that we are approaching a rich prize that others have abandoned because of its difficulty.
